I have been quite remiss in blog posts. Here it is mid July already. Production is in full swing. We're starting to pick greenbeans but wrapping up the strawberries. It's been very dry. The drip irrigation has been running often. Not too hot outside, though, so things are staying nice. Quite warm of course in the big hoophouse so the tomatoes are enjoying that. Plenty of tomatoes setting on, a few have started to ripen. We had to add some netting around the beets to deter the bunnies. You know, just typical market growers' concerns.
This week will be our third week at the market. It's been a slow run up to spring so all we've had so far is spinach, lettuce, radishes and our famous apple tarts. They all sold quite well. People seem very eager to get some fresh local produce, especially after our harsh winter. Peas, carrots and beets are taking their own sweet time. Broccoli is in the ground and will be ready, well, before too long we hope.
Sault Farmer's Market starts next Wednesday. We'll be there with spinach and our famous rustic apple tarts.
We have spinach, lettuce, beets, carrots, peas, and brocolli planted in the hoophouse and many plants under lights ready to go out to the hoophouse once the overnight temps stay consistently above freezing. So this summer look for the above foods and tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers, green beans, oregano, basil, celery, squash, cabbage, brussel sprouts and more. We've had a few frosts so the season is winding down. Our last week at the farmer's market and we'll have basil for pesto, tomatoes, tomatillas, cabbage, broccoli, kale, peppers and of course our famous tarts. See you at Oktoberfest this weekend, then at the winter market at Bayliss Library on Saturday mornings Dec through May and of course next year at the Sault Farmer's Market.
I think we've had quite enough rain for a little while, thank you. Nice to not have a drought so we won't complain too much.
Basil, tomatoes, kale, tomatillas are coming on strong. We'll be at the market for the next week or so with produce and the famous fruit tarts. We also will continue to sell to select local restaurants through the fall. This week at the market, we'll have carrots, snow peas, green beans, and of course the famous fruit tarts. First broccoli crop is done, second crop not quite in yet. Same with beets. Be patient. There will be more. Also, we have our first ripe tomato so it won't be long until you can enjoy those, too.
Hello Strawberries! (but it's "until we meet again" to the asparagus).
Beets, carrots, snow peas, romaine lettuce, kale continue to be quite popular. I will take We were at the market last week, just ran out of time to post it to the blog. This week we'll be at the market with brocolli, lettuce, kale, beets, carrots, asparagus and snowpeas. This will be the last of the asparagus this season. The lettuce and snowpeas are slowing down until the next crop comes in. Nice warm temps - 100+ in the hoophouse. Reminds us of Kansas.
Nice soaking rain shower yesterday afternoon. Got a bit noisy in the hoophouse as we were planting tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, basil and snapdragons.
At the market today: snow peas, spinach, carrots, beets, romaine and buttercrunch lettuce, kale, pac choi. broccoli is looking good for next week. |
